1.Discipline Overview and Research Fields Of Veterinary Medicine

1.Discipline Overview

The first-level discipline of veterinary medicine, originating from the Animal Medicine of Hubei Farming School established in 1898 by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Hubei and Hunan provinces, is entitled to confer doctoral degree and offers postdoctoral programs. The aim of the discipline is to protect animals and human health and develop animal husbandry, ensuring food safety and safeguarding environmental &ecological security. It covers 4 secondary disciplines, which are Basic Veterinary Science, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Clinical Veterinary Medicine, and Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety. It was awarded “A+” in the fourth round of national discipline assessment and selected as the one of the national “Double first-class” construction disciplines in 2017. The field of swine disease, veterinary drug residue detection, and food safety assessment are recognized as world first-class disciplines, supporting agricultural science to rank top 1‰, botany and zoology top 1‰, and other 3 disciplines, namely microbiology, molecular biology and genetics, and pharmacology and toxicology, top 1% in ESI.

2.Secondary Disciplines and Research Fields

2. Secondary Disciplines and Research Fields

This major is a national characteristic major and a brand major of Hubei Province. It cultivates students to master the basic theories and basic knowledge of basic veterinary medicine, preventive veterinary medicine, clinical veterinary medicine, veterinary pharmacology and public health, and carry out basic training in animal body normal and abnormal structure and function experiments, inspections, disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment technology, animal product inspection and quarantine, etc. It has the basic ability to engage in animal health care, clinical diagnosis and treatment, prevention recommendations, animal product safety supervision and veterinary health management work. It can be competent in production, operation, management, technical research and development and promotion of veterinary clinical diagnosis and treatment, animal disease prevention and control, food safety and public health management in veterinary administrative management departments, veterinary clinical institutions, enterprises and institutions.

2.1 Basic Veterinary Science

The basic veterinary science is a discipline that studies on the biology of animals at the tissue, cellular and molecular levels, the occurrence and development of diseases, and drug development and application. It is composed of a few branches: Animal Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Animal Physiology and Biochemistry, Veterinary Pathology, and Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology. Based on this key discipline of Hubei Province, research platforms such as National Laboratory of Safety Evaluation of Veterinary Drugs, National Reference Laboratory of Veterinary Drug Residues, Key Laboratory of the Detection for Veterinary Drug Residues of Ministry of Agriculture, Wuhan Engineering Technology Research Center for Detection of Animal Food Residues have been established.

2.2 Preventive Veterinary Medicine

Preventive veterinary medicine is a discipline that studies the occurrence and development of animal infectious diseases, pathogenesis and immune mechanisms, principles and techniques of diagnosis, prevention and control. It covers 4 tertiary disciplines, namely, Veterinary Microbiology and Immunology, Veterinary Lemology, Veterinary Parasites and Parasitology, and Veterinary Epidemiology. The main research area covers the interaction between various pathogens (virus, bacteria, and parasites) and their hosts (livestock, poultry, companion animals, laboratory animals

wild animals, human beings, etc.), at various levels ranging from population, individual, cells and molecules level. Based on the discipline of preventive veterinary medicine, which is recognized as the Characteristic Discipline of Universities in Hubei Province, more than a dozen of research platforms at different levels have been established, such as National Key Laboratory of Agro-microbiology, National and Local United Engineering Laboratory of Animal Disease Prevention and Control (Hubei), National Animal Tuberculosis Para-Reference Laboratory (Wuhan) of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, The International Cooperation Base on Animal Breeding and Disease Control Technology, Engineering Research Center of Animal Biopharmaceuticals of Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Development of Veterinary Diagnostic Products of Ministry of Agriculture, International Joint Research and Training Center for terinary Epidemiology of Hubei Province, Hubei Preventive Veterinary Medicine Key Laboratory (Huazhong Agricultural University), Hubei Provincial Engineering Laboratory for Animal Disease Prevention and Control, International Joint Research Centre for Animal Disease Control, Hubei Animal Vaccine Engineering Technology Research Center, the Cooperative Innovation Center for Sustainable Pig Production, Animal Bio-safety Level 3 Laboratory of Huazhong Agricultural University, Animal Disease Diagnostic Center of Huazhong Agricultural University, etc.

2.3 Clinical Veterinary Medicine

Clinical veterinary medicine is a discipline that studies the etiology, pathogeny, diagnosis, and prevention & control of animal clinical diseases at various levels ranging from molecule, cell, tissue and organ, individual and population. It is comprised of 5 tertiary disciplines: Veterinary Clinical Diagnostics, Veterinary Internal Medicine, Veterinary Surgery, Theriogenology, and >Chinese Traditional Veterinary Medicine. Its research fields cover the diagnosis, treatment and control diseases of livestock, poultry, companion animals, laboratory animals, and wild animals. As the Key Discipline of Hubei Province, Clinical Veterinary Medicine is equipped with the Key Discipline of Hubei Province Animal Nutrition and Metabolic Disease Research Center, Veterinary Acupuncture and Anaesthesia Training Base, Ground for Clinical Pet Drugs (GCP), and Pharmaceutical Non-Clinical Research Base (GLP).

2.4 Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety

It is a comprehensive discipline that focuses on zoonosis, animal-derived food safety, veterinary epidemiology, laboratory animal and comparative medicine, and animal biosafety under the theme of “one health” in order to ensure human, animal and environmental health. It includes 2 tertiary disciplines, namely, zoonosis and food safety of animal origin. Its research fields cover zoonotic pathogen ecology;epidemiology; pathogenicity and immune mechanism; new technologies and products for disease prevention and control; risk monitoring, assessment, and safety control of animal-derived products; risk monitoring, prevention, and control of pathogenic antimicrobial resistance; the formation and transmission of antimicrobial resistance; laboratory animal and comparative medicine et al. The college undertakes talent training, scientific research, and social service based on National Key Laboratory of Agro-microbiology, International Research Center for Animal Disease of Ministry of Science and Technology,, Laboratory for Risk Assessment of Quality and Safety of Livestock and Poultry Products (Wuhan), Ministry of Agriculture,P.R. China, the Cooperative Innovation Center for Sustainable Pig Production (jointly built by the Ministry and the Province), International Joint Research and Training Center for Veterinary Epidemiology of Hubei Province, and Animal Bio-safety Level 3 Laboratory of Huazhong Agricultural University.
